IELTS Speaking Test - Sample 12

✔ (Rated ★★★)

Part 1 - Introduction

Q. Good afternoon. My name is Vinnie Pham. Could I have your name, please?
A. Good afternoon Sir. My name is Thuan Tran and my nickname is Tina.

Q. Where is your hometown?
A. My hometown's in Binh Thuan which is a province of Vietnam. It is located on the country's South Central Coast. It is sometimes seen as part of the Southeast region. The province is known for its scenery and beaches. There are also a number of sites of archaeological significance.

Q. Is there much to do in your hometown?
A. Oh yes, there's certainly lots to do there.
Binh Thuan attracts tourists from everywhere for its lovely landscapes. The mountains lie from west to east and reach the beautiful beaches. Famous tourist sites include Ca Na, Phan Thiet, Mui Ne, and Ham Tan. There are many great architectural sites such as towers, communal houses, pagodas, temples, shrines, and tombs. Lively cultural activities including festivals, traditional customs, dancing, and traditional music take place in Binh Thuan. The population of Binh Thuan still follows traditional values of Sa Huynh and Cham ancient cultures.

If you like going out in the evening there are a lot of good restaurants and bars. If you prefer cultural activities there are museums and art galleries. But if you like nature, there are lots of other things outside of the city which are easy to reach.

Q. What are the people like in your hometown?
A. They are mostly quite friendly, but as with most big cities everyone is often busy so it may seem as if they are not interested in speaking or having a chat. But if you live there you know that most people are quite happy to have a chat if they have time and will help you if needed.

Part 2 - Cue Card

Topic:
Describe an important decision/ choice that you made in your life.

You should say:
  • What the decision was
  • When you took the decision
  • What the results of the decision was and whether it was a good choice.
Sample Answer:

I had to make the decision about 6 months ago. I had been self-employed for a while, but then there was a downturn in the economy and I stopped getting enough work to support myself. I applied for a job in Đà Lạt, which was a city I didn’t know at all, and when I had first an interview, and then a job offer, I was faced with a big decision. Should I leave my home and friends to start a new life in Đà Lạt for a promising job at Vietcombank Dalat; or should I stay where I was in my lovely house and familiar surroundings, and hope the work might pick up again in the future?

I thought a lot about the pros and cons; I cried a lot to be honest, as the thought of making a new start was really scary. I’d be all on my own, and what if I didn’t make friends or couldn’t do the job well? However, ultimately it came down to income. I couldn’t live on fresh air, and this was a well-paid job. I also thought if I turned the work down, and then didn’t manage to find new customers and increase sales. I’d always wonder ‘what if?’ or how might things have been different if I’d just been brave enough to ‘give it a go!’. I accepted the job and started to pack. In less than three weeks I was renting an apartment in a new city and turning up to work in a new office with new colleagues.

So in conclusion, I think it was a big decision, but I made a good choice. Of course, it was an important one as it changed everything for me, from where I lived and worked, to who my friends are. Honestly, though, I think perhaps with decisions it matters less what you decide, and more that once you have made a decision you make the best of it, wherever it may take you. Sometimes the journey is speedy and smooth, sometimes it is rocky along the way, but whatever path we choose, it is what makes us the people we are – for better or worse!

Part 3 - Discussion topic

Children's games

Q. How have games changed from the time when you were a child?
A. Games have changed tremendously over the years. When we were children the standard of the game or the players was not as good as it is today. Moreover, newer rules have been introduced to make it more appealing to television audiences. I think the speed of the game has considerably increased. There is much more money in sports and games today, so more and more young people are interested in making it a full-time career. That was not the case when I was a child.

Q. Do you think this has been a positive change? Why?
A. Yes, it has definitely been a positive change in all ways. Games have become more popular and players get much better rewards. Televised games have made it possible for people to watch games in the comfort of their homes rather than going to a stadium. Watching games has become a very easy affair. Overall, the standard of the game has improved.

Q. Why do you think children like playing games?
A. Children are physically very active and you can’t keep them idle for a long time. They always like to be with their friends, playing some games. Psychologically, at their age, they can’t think of engaging in a serious activity for a long time. Playing games would occupy them time in a very effective way; otherwise, they are going to create some mischief at home.
